Winner of Oman Today Restaurant Awards in Far Eastern Category

Marjan Restaurant and Pool Bar
: 24641234
Grand Hyatt Muscat

Winner of the Best Far Eastern Restaurant Award in 2008, this seasonal restaurant operates as a pool bar throughout the day, and during the cooler winter months of the year transforms in the evenings into a tranquil restaurant serving south east Asian cuisine.

Food is served from the wok, stir-fried, braised or grilled, with a variety of dips and sauces.

The restaurant also has a sushi bar and offers healthy soups such as Tom Yum Koong, a sweet and sour shrimp concoction.

While the main courses focus mainly on seafood, Marjan’s dessert offerings are traditional Thai such as banana sago cream and pineapple tartlets. Open daily, 10am to 7pm; dinner, except on Fridays, is served 7–10.30pm.

Al Wadi Commercial Centre, Qurm: 99563368
Markaz al Bahja: 99011145

At Chinese Palace, don’t miss the lamb chops with spiced salt, the crunchy smoked fish or the bird’s-nest soup (the last allegedly takes three days to prepare). To end, try the banana toffee.

Golden Oryx: 24702266
Rex Road

Visitors can choose from the Thai or Chinese sections of the menu, or opt for the popular Mongolian barbecue. One of the oldest Oriental restaurants in Muscat, it also serves some of the best food in the city.

The restaurant sprawls out over two floors that house its various sections and softly lit nooks and crannies, so that although the restaurant can seat a large number of people, the first impression is one of intimacy.

The food is good, even very good, but the menu caters more to local taste than to authenticity. Perhaps that’s why the Golden Oryx is so successful – it proves that the kitchen is alive and well, updating dishes many thousands of kilometres from their country of origin.
RO7

Jade Garden: 24605945
Al Qurum Resort

Jade Garden serves Thai, Chinese and Japanese cuisines. Watch out for sushi night on Thursday – the buffet tables serve a wide variety of sushi dishes – and teppanyaki, daily, 7–11pm. Guests can watch the fantastic performance of the chef cooking right in front of the tables.

Lai Thai : 98025189, 98025191
Al Khuwayr

Lai Thai, Oman’s second Thai restaurant, is part of a small chain with three restaurants in Afghanistan and one in Kosovo.

Lalita Thongngamkam, the Bangkok-born restaurateur, feels that Thai food is popular with non-Thais as it is not greasy and need not always be spicy.

Among the dishes she hopes will be popular here are Tom Yum Koong (spicy prawn soup with lime juice and herbs), Pad Thai (Lalita’s favourite) and green curry.

Located on Dohat al Adab Street, between the Safeer International and Safeer Plaza hotels, Lai Thai, with a capacity of 26 covers, is open daily, 11am–12am. The restaurant is now back in business after renovation.

Narjeel: 24560606
Asas Oman Hotel Apartment

Situated in a quiet neighbourhood in Qurm Heights, Narjeel is a themed restaurant built around the coconut tree and its uses in the cuisines of Oman and the Far East.

This new restaurant serves Far Eastern food, specialising in Thai cuisine with emphasis on seafood dishes. The menu features a variety of spicy appetisers along with soups, rice and various curries and noodles.

It recommends its Shrimp Canapé as an appetiser, Tom Yum Koong and Hoo Mok Talay and its Pa Naeng Talay. For those looking to enjoy freshly prepared meals in a relaxing environment, Narjeel with its interiors reflecting the earthy tones of Omani
architecture, complete with hand-crafted mats from Fanja made of local wadi reeds that decorate the ceiling, would be a good choice. Narjeel is open daily, 10am to 11pm.

Shang Thai:  24483083
Al Khuwayr slip road

As its name suggests, Shang Thai serves a blend of Chinese and Thai cuisine, with special focus on authentic Thai food.

Shang Thai recommends its Tod Man Pla and chicken in pandan leaves for starters, Tom Kha Kai soup, Som Tam Je salad, Szechwan chilli prawns and bamboo fish from its seafood platter, Kraprow Phak, steamed greens, Pad Thai noodles, Thai fried rice and tempura ice cream.

The restaurant, just behind McDonald’s, also owns an Indian restaurant on the same premises and is open 11am–11.30pm. RO7.5 Not licensed, no delivery, veg-friendly

Madinat as Sultan Qaboos

This stylish restaurant serves delicious Thai and Chinese food that is prepared by two separate teams of chefs, one from Thailand, the other Chinese.

Among the Thai offerings are fish or prawn cakes, mixed satay and Tom Yum Koong; and from the Chinese menu, the aromatic crispy duck is a best-seller, served with juliennes of vegetables, thin pancakes and either hoi-sin or plum sauce.

Silk Route is well designed, and is open Saturday to Thursday, 12–3pm and 6–11.30pm, and Friday, 1–3pm and 6–11.30pm. It offers deliveries, too.
